The Faith Academy of Marble Falls football team defeated Sugar Land Logos Prep 52-41 Aug. 28 at Bryan Allen Academy.
The Flames (1-0) raced to a 24-15 lead in the first quarter thanks to senior Andrew Houy, who had three rushing touchdowns and sophomore kicker Egan Barnes connecting on all 3 two-point kicks.
But a fumble and a four-and-out by the Flames allowed the Lions (0-1) “to slow play it in the second quarter,” Faith head coach Jay Silvers said.
That resulted in Logos Prep leading 31-24 at the half that might have been tied had the Flames connected on a long touchdown pass that was dropped.
That advantage went to 37-24 in the third quarter. A key for Faith coaches was to emphasize doing the little things that result in big plays the rest of the way.
One big one was blocking.
“They’d pin them for two or three yards back, but (the Lions) would peel off,” Silvers said. “In the second half, we got on the blocks and were holding a little longer. They started doing the work and the things they know to do. The defense stepped up and the offense finally got to clicking.”
As a result, Faith took a 38-37 lead. And though the Lions kicked a four-point field goal for a 41-38 advantage, the Flames responded with two more touchdowns.
Defensively, Houy caught an interception and sophomore Quinton Merlick “recovered a fumble to seal it.”
Silvers said the one key point at the intermission was “being more aggressive.”
“In the first half, (the defense) was a bend, don’t break mentality,” he said. “In the second half, we were going to be more aggressive.”
Houy finished with 108 rushing yards and four touchdowns and completed 5 of 6 passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Adam Merlick caught two passes for 55 yards and two scores. Sophomore Landon Silvers had 113 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, junior Price Rosamond had seven tackles, while Houy had five and an interception, Quinton Merlick had four tackles and a fumble recovery.
The Flames welcomes Austin Valor North at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, to Britton Field in Faith’s home opener.
